Not too long ago, @thebandwashere took a present-day look at the iconic “Push” cover of TWS. Now, set to the tune of Devo, Steve Birnbaum is back in San Diego County with Tony Hawk and Grant Brittain in tow, to revisit some of Tony’s most iconic photo spots. This video is sick!

They say you shouldn’t meet your heroes, but when your hero turns out to be everything you wished for and more, I say go for it!
There’s not much more to say about Tony Hawk’s impact on skateboarding and countless individuals, so I won’t try. But let me share that he was everything to me when I first got into skateboarding. Posters on my walls, drawings, skate decks, and dreaming of one day competing/skating with Tony Hawk.
TransWorld SKATEboarding magazine was my go-to source of inspiration. Behind the captivating images and stories, Grant Brittain’s photography transported me to a distant world. California, palm trees, pools, skate contests, and epic vert ramps seemed worlds away from my suburban Pennsylvania home. It was always a big deal when a rickety quarterpipe would mysteriously appear in someone’s driveway or deep within the woods. The concrete architecture around us often forced us to become creative in our own environment.
When Grant recently shared some of his early images of Tony skating behind VG Donuts in Cardiff by the sea, I couldn’t resist the urge to visit. The simplicity of those times, the camaraderie of skating with friends, and the relentless pursuit of mastering even the simplest tricks resonated deeply with me. I often found myself in a similar situation, trying to emulate the tricks we saw in magazines from our favorite skaters and photographers who took the images.”
So heavy to see that all those spots are still there!
