The Winnipeg Jets have signed Neal Pionk to a six-year contract extension after reaching an agreement to pay the defenceman an average of $7 million per year, the team said in a news release Thursday.
Pionk is in the last season of a four-year, $23.5 million contract, and would have become a free agent July 1.
This season, the 29-year-old from Omaha, Neb., has earned 39 points for the Jets, scoring 10 goals — matching his career high for goals in a season — and 29 assists.
Pionk signed with the New York Rangers as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He was acquired by the Jets in a 2019 trade.
Over the course of his career with the Jets and Rangers, Pionk has tallied 256 points with 44 goals and 212 assists in 536 career NHL games.
